Welcome from the Residency Director

Portrait of Dr. Brian Williams

Thank you for considering the Public Health and General Preventive Medicine residency program at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, MS. As the only academic medical center in Mississippi, we offer unique training opportunities. We have strong relationships with the Mississippi State Department of Health and the G.V. Sonny Montgomery VA Medical Center, where residents can complete rotations, in addition to their clinical, quality improvement, and other rotations at UMMC. A range of other training opportunities are available, including clinical experiences in a large community health center, school health, health policy experiences, and research opportunities.

Our department has a strong commitment to the education of residents and students, and we are very excited about having created the first preventive medicine residency program in Mississippi, a state with high levels of preventable morbidity and mortality, where there is a tremendous opportunity to positively impact population health.

As a native Mississippian, this work is particularly meaningful for me. I completed my medical doctorate at UMMC, having already decided to pursue a career in preventive medicine. However, with no preventive medicine training program in the state, I had no choice but to leave the state for my residency training. It is highly gratifying, more than 20 years later, to now offer specialty training in preventive medicine in Mississippi.

The future opportunities for our department are exciting to contemplate. We are a unique department, in that we are housed both in the School of Medicine and the new John D. Bower School of Population Health. This puts us in an excellent position to benefit from and contribute to all the missions of the Medical Center, from patient care and quality improvement to population level research and health improvement efforts.

If you are looking for an opportunity for broad based training in public health and general preventive medicine, in a setting where you can make a significant positive impact, seriously consider our program, and I will look forward to meeting you during your interview day. If you have any more questions about our program please email our  Preventive Medicine Residency Program.
